Fable: Find Out How Combat Works After Our First Hands-on
Playground Games demonstrated Fable’s combat system at gamescom 2026, showcasing a demo where players switch between melee, ranged, and magic attacks with varied loadouts. The game evolves the classic Strength, Skill, and Will systems, offering flexible combat options.
At gamescom 2026, Playground Games presented the first press demo of Fable’s combat mechanics, titled ‘Mud and Death,’ where players navigate a haunted mine filled with ghosts and skeletons alongside Humphry, leader of the Heroes’ Guild. The combat system builds on the original trilogy’s Strength, Skill, and Will framework, allowing seamless transitions between melee, ranged, and magic attacks. Players can choose loadouts that drastically alter playstyle, with equipment and skills shaping combat effectiveness. The demo highlighted the Bower Hammer, a two-handed melee weapon with powerful strikes and crowd-clearing swings, including a charge attack that spins through multiple enemies.
The combat system emphasizes responsive controls, featuring dodging, parrying, and weapon-specific finishers that add flair to encounters. Parries can decapitate enemies, leaving them staggered and vulnerable to counters. Spells, assigned to four slots and activated via controller inputs, introduce further tactical depth, enabling builds focused on ranged, evasion, or area-of-effect strategies. Ranged weapons like the Deepwood Bow offer high accuracy for targeting weak points, while later encounters with the Lantern Keeper demonstrated the value of ranged attacks in exploiting specific vulnerabilities.
The demo underscored the intuitive integration of combat abilities, allowing players to combine spells, ranged strikes, and melee finishers fluidly without menu navigation. This accessibility does not diminish the system’s depth, as loadout choices can create vastly different playstyles. The combat’s flexibility is designed to minimize busywork, enabling players to focus on strategic decision-making during encounters. Playground Games’ approach suggests a system that rewards adaptability and preparation.
The demo also revealed the scale of enemy encounters, with large groups and dynamic spawns testing players’ reflexes and tactics. Playground Games has not yet detailed all combat mechanics, but the preview suggests a system that balances accessibility with strategic complexity. Fable is scheduled for release on February 23, 2027, with early access for Premium Edition players starting February 18. The game will be available on Xbox Series X|S, PC, cloud, and included with Game Pass, supporting Xbox Play Anywhere for cross-platform play.
