Amazon Web Services announced the general availability of Amazon EC2 R9g and R9gd instances, which are powered by AWS Graviton5 processors. These instances are designed to optimize performance for memory-intensive workloads, including databases, analytics, and containerized applications. The new processors are positioned as the fifth generation of custom-designed CPUs, emphasizing cost efficiency for such workloads. The instances are available in select regions, including US East and EU (Frankfurt).

R9g instances support a wide range of workloads, including databases, in-memory caches, real-time big data analytics, and applications written in languages such as Java, Python, and Go. They are optimized for Linux-based environments, including containerized and microservices applications. R9gd instances additionally provide local NVMe-based SSD block-level storage, making them suitable for workloads requiring high-speed data access. Both instance types are built on the sixth-generation AWS Nitro System.

AWS Graviton5 processors deliver up to 25% better compute performance compared to previous-generation Graviton4-based instances. Benchmarks indicate performance improvements of up to 30% for databases, 35% for web applications, and 35% for machine learning tasks. The processors feature a cache size five times larger than their predecessors and offer the fastest memory available in cloud-based processor instances. These enhancements are intended to provide significant gains for memory-bound workloads.

The new instances incorporate the Nitro Isolation Engine, which uses formal verification to ensure mathematical assurance of workload isolation from other customers and AWS operators. This marks a new standard for cloud security, providing a higher level of assurance for workload isolation. R9g and R9gd instances are available through multiple purchasing models, including Savings Plans, On-Demand, Spot instances, Dedicated instances, and Dedicated hosts.
