Amazon WorkSpaces has introduced additional performance and session health metrics to Amazon CloudWatch, expanding visibility for IT administrators managing virtual desktop workloads. The new metrics cover network performance, compute and storage resource utilization, and session lifecycle events without incurring extra charges. This update aims to help teams monitor and optimize their WorkSpaces deployments more effectively by providing granular data on operational conditions.

The enhanced metrics enable administrators to proactively detect and address issues affecting end-user experience. Key indicators include TCP retransmission rate and congestion window for network performance, GPU usage and CPU queue length for compute bottlenecks, and disk I/O queue lengths and memory page hard faults for storage and memory pressure. These insights allow for quicker troubleshooting and improved system reliability across virtual desktop environments.

Administrators can configure CloudWatch alarms to receive immediate notifications of performance anomalies, create custom dashboards for fleet-wide monitoring, and reduce the time required to resolve issues. The metrics are accessible in all AWS Regions where Amazon WorkSpaces operates, ensuring consistent monitoring capabilities regardless of geographic deployment.
