Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Gateway now supports AWS Step Functions workflows as tools for AI agents, enabling agents to trigger and manage workflows while Step Functions executes each step according to predefined logic. Standard and Express workflows can be used, with the service orchestrating over 220 AWS services to maintain consistent process execution. AgentCore Gateway connects agents to tools through the Model Context Protocol, ensuring agents can initiate multi-step business processes reliably and repeatedly.

Agents can integrate existing Step Functions workflows into their operations, such as running refund processes that include eligibility checks, manager approval, and credit issuance in a fixed sequence. This ensures every refund adheres to company policies without manual intervention. Additionally, agents can query workflow run histories, allowing operations teams to identify failed steps and troubleshoot issues efficiently.

The capability is available in all AWS Regions where Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Gateway is offered, with users billed at standard rates for both Step Functions and AgentCore Gateway usage. Developers can follow the Step Functions Developer Guide tutorial to begin implementation, while detailed setup options are outlined in the AgentCore Gateway documentation.

For developers using AI coding assistants like Kiro, the Agent Toolkit for AWS provides specialized skills and guidance to streamline building workflows and integrating them with AI agents. Supported operations and configurations are documented for reference.
