Apple introduced the Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra, positioning the desktop as a high-performance solution for on-device AI and professional workloads. The new chips deliver up to 4.3x faster AI performance than previous generations, with M5 Max offering up to 3.9x improvement and M5 Ultra achieving up to 4.3x peak AI compute compared to M3 Ultra. The systems support up to 512GB of unified memory and 1.2TB/s memory bandwidth, enabling local execution of large AI models without cloud dependency.

The M5 Max features an 18-core CPU and up to a 40-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, providing up to 50% faster graphics performance for tasks like real-time 3D rendering and motion graphics. The Media Engine supports hardware-accelerated decoding for formats including H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and AV1, allowing professionals to handle uncompressed 8K footage and multiple video streams simultaneously. The system also includes third-generation hardware-accelerated ray tracing for improved lighting and reflections in creative workflows.

The M5 Ultra variant includes an up-to-36-core CPU and an 80-core GPU, delivering up to 1.3x higher multithreaded performance than M3 Ultra and up to 4.3x faster AI compute. It supports up to 512GB of unified memory and 1.2TB/s bandwidth, enabling real-time 8K color grading, complex VFX simulations, and local training of AI models. The Media Engine in M5 Ultra doubles the video encode and decode blocks of M5 Max, allowing simultaneous playback of up to 33 streams of 8K ProRes 422 at 30 fps.

Apple highlighted environmental initiatives for the new Mac Studio, including 35% recycled content in its construction, 100% recycled aluminum in the enclosure, and 100% recycled rare earth elements in magnets. Manufacturing uses 40% renewable energy across the supply chain, and the product meets Apple’s energy efficiency and safety standards. Packaging is 100% fiber-based and fully recyclable.
