Clocaenog in Denbighshire had lacked reliable mobile coverage for decades until a collaboration between BT, local councils, and the Welsh Government introduced EE’s network to the area. The project, supported by additional funding from the Brenig Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund, now provides high-speed EE mobile connectivity to residents and businesses. The solution involved installing technology on an existing lamppost, offering a practical approach to extending coverage in challenging rural locations. This initiative is part of broader efforts to address persistent mobile ‘not-spots’ where traditional infrastructure is difficult to deploy.

Kris Longworth, a Clocaenog resident, highlighted the transformative impact of the new EE coverage. Previously, reliable signal required leaving the village, but now calls can be made at home and while walking locally. Longworth, who works remotely, noted the flexibility allows managing messages and calls away from his desk, while also providing a backup if broadband fails or family needs to contact him. He described the change as a ‘real game-changer’ for the rural community, enabling better connectivity for daily life and work.

Susi Marston, Head of Public Sector Wales at BT Business, emphasized the opportunities the connectivity brings to residents and businesses. The partnership focused on delivering better connections to services, stronger community links, and confidence for future growth. BT used ‘mini masts’ to provide necessary network services while respecting the area’s character. The project reflects a broader commitment to improving digital infrastructure in Wales, aligning with the Welsh Government’s goals for stronger connectivity and economic opportunity.

The Clocaenog project follows BT’s earlier initiative in Penmachno, where EE became the first UK operator to deliver reliable mobile connectivity. Since 2020, BT has invested over £500 million in fixed and mobile connectivity across Wales. Adam Price, Cabinet Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy, underscored the importance of eliminating digital not-spots to foster economic growth and innovation in Wales.
