The useful question is what changes for users, developers or buyers, and whether the announcement stays industry context or becomes something people can actually use.

BT Group reported a solid start to its fiscal year, with record new full fibre connections and take-up across Openreach and Consumer divisions. For the first time, fibre accounted for more than half of broadband revenues, while the Consumer customer base continued to grow through investment in services. In Business, service revenue stabilised, supported by strong sales growth from major customers, and non-voice revenue increased despite the final year of the PSTN switch-off.

The company expanded its 5G+ network to cover 77% of the UK population and remains on track to reach 25 million full fibre premises by December. Internationally, BT’s proposed joint venture with Verizon aims to create a global connectivity platform, allowing the company to focus on domestic transformation. Financial targets, including cash flow of approximately £2.0 billion this year and £3.0 billion by 2030, remain unchanged.

BT Group consists of three customer-facing units: Consumer, Business, and Openreach, the latter providing wholesale fixed access infrastructure to over 700 UK communications providers. The International division, serving multinational organisations and overseas public sector customers, will be contributed to a new joint venture expected to complete in the second half of 2027.

All financial metrics are presented on a continuing operations basis following the reclassification of the International division as a discontinued operation. Reported revenue and profit before tax are presented as unadjusted statutory measures, while management assesses trading results on an adjusted basis. The company is listed on the London Stock Exchange under BT Group plc.
