BT Business secures multi-million pound contract to enhance critical national infrastructure for Scottish Water

BT Business will deliver a fully integrated network and security service for Scottish Water, replacing a multi-supplier model with a single provider approach. The agreement covers approximately 7,000 network connections across broadband, MPLS, satellite and internet services, as well as operational technology networks essential for water services. BT will manage both IT and operational technology environments, improving visibility and enabling faster incident response across Scotland’s water infrastructure.

The partnership includes the establishment of a converged Network Operations Centre and Security Operations Centre, combining real-time monitoring and cyber security into one operational model. This aims to reduce fault resolution times, strengthen protection for critical systems and enhance the reliability of water services for households, businesses and communities. Scottish Water serves around 2.6 million households and 150,000 business properties, supporting over 5 million people.

BT’s bid was strengthened by its local presence in Scotland and ability to deliver at national scale, with a dedicated team working closely with Scottish Water. The collaboration includes commitments to social value initiatives, focusing on local employment, skills development and community engagement across Scotland. These efforts align with Scottish Water’s long-term goals for a resilient, sustainable and innovative water sector.

Scottish Water’s Director of Digital & Innovation, Chris Toop, highlighted the partnership as a key step in the organisation’s digital journey, enabling more resilient and efficient services. Ishbell MacPhail, Head of BT Business Scotland, emphasised the role of BT’s expertise and local teams in supporting essential water services for millions across Scotland.
