BT brings dedicated 5G+ connectivity to Royal Welsh Show to power payments, livestreaming and customer experiences
BT and the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society are demonstrating 5G+ network slicing at the Royal Welsh Show to support payments, livestreaming, and digital engagement during peak demand.
The useful question is what changes for users, developers or buyers, and whether the announcement stays industry context or becomes something people can actually use.
BT and the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society are using 5G+ network slicing at this year’s Royal Welsh Show to provide dedicated connectivity for mission-critical services. The technology supports local businesses such as Radnor Hills and Fire and Flank by ensuring reliable mobile payments and real-time content sharing during peak trading periods. Network slicing allocates a protected portion of the mobile network for specific use cases, preventing performance issues even when the public network is congested. This marks one of the first large-scale public demonstrations of 5G network slicing in a high-footfall environment.
The 5G+ network slice will power mobile payment systems for Welsh food and drink companies Radnor Hills and Fire and Flank, helping maintain smooth operations during the event. Chris Butler of Radnor Hills highlighted the importance of dependable connectivity for processing payments efficiently, while David Evans of Fire and Flank emphasized the need for reliable ePOS systems to avoid delays. BT’s demonstration reflects growing demand for resilient connectivity in high-demand settings, particularly for businesses reliant on digital transactions.
BT is also using network slicing to support the Royal Welsh Show’s digital engagement activities, enabling reliable livestreaming and content uploads by Show Ambassador Teleri-Haf Thomas and the event team. Aled Jones, Chief Executive of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society, noted the increasing role of connectivity in delivering the event safely and efficiently. The collaboration with BT aims to showcase how next-generation mobile technology can enhance both on-site and online experiences for visitors and exhibitors.
Adam Price, Welsh Government Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy, welcomed the initiative, stating that high-quality digital connectivity is essential for nationally significant events. Greg McCall, BT’s Chief Security and Networks Officer, emphasized the role of 5G+ network slicing in delivering seamless connectivity for payments, social media sharing, and online engagement. BT’s investment in Wales, including over £500 million since 2020, underpins these upgrades as part of a broader effort to enhance digital infrastructure across the country.
