CERN has launched geological investigations beneath Lake Geneva as part of studies for the proposed Future Circular Collider (FCC), a next-generation particle accelerator. Seismic surveys and drilling began in 2025 and resumed this year to map geological layers up to 400 metres below ground, providing critical data for assessing the FCC’s underground infrastructure. The work uses specialised methods, including vessel-based seismic measurements and targeted boreholes, to minimise environmental impact while ensuring accurate subsurface mapping. The campaign is authorised by local authorities and follows strict environmental and safety protocols.

The data collected will refine geological models and reduce uncertainty about the FCC’s potential location and depth. Findings will be publicly available after processing, supporting further research and informing municipal and institutional planning. The campaign runs until October 2026, with results expected to strengthen the technical basis for subsequent FCC studies. This initiative is part of a broader programme launched in autumn 2024, including surface site investigations.

Public participation processes are underway in both Host States to ensure transparency. In Switzerland, a consultation began on 18 May 2026 and runs until 2 October 2026, featuring workshops and site visits. In France, a public debate organised by the Commission nationale du débat public (CNDP) is ongoing from 2 June to 1 October 2026, with public meetings, round tables, and online events.

The processes aim to facilitate informed dialogue on the FCC’s scientific, environmental, and territorial implications ahead of a potential approval decision, which is not expected before 2028. The engagement efforts complement technical studies, ensuring stakeholders can contribute to discussions about the project’s future.
