Minister LeBlanc updates Advisory Committee on Canada–U.S. Economic Relations

Canada’s Minister of Canada–U.S. Trade, Dominic LeBlanc, along with Chief Trade Negotiator Janice Charette and Ambassador Mark Wiseman, briefed the Advisory Committee on Canada–U.S. Economic Relations on ongoing trade discussions with the United States. The meeting addressed efforts to resolve outstanding trade issues before the August 19 deadline, including securing relief from existing sectoral tariffs and new Section 338 tariffs planned by the U.S.

Committee members shared perspectives on advancing Canadian interests during the trade negotiations, which are intensifying ahead of the deadline. The discussions focused on securing mutual benefits for both countries while protecting Canada’s economic priorities. The government emphasized its commitment to addressing concerns raised by Canadian businesses, industry, labour, and other stakeholders throughout the process.

Minister LeBlanc, Charette, and Wiseman, who joined the meeting virtually from Washington, D.C., highlighted the importance of continued engagement with the Advisory Committee. They stressed that Canada’s approach remains collaborative, aiming to navigate the current trade environment while safeguarding economic interests across the country.

The Government of Canada reiterated its dedication to working with partners nationwide to protect the interests of workers, farmers, businesses, and families. The officials underscored that ongoing consultations with stakeholders will guide Canada’s strategy as trade talks progress toward the August 19 deadline and beyond.
