Partnering with Khan Academy on building AI tools for classrooms

Google and Khan Academy announced new AI-powered learning tools for classrooms, developed using Google’s Gemini models. The tools, now available in Khanmigo, include interactive visual aids that adapt in real time to student work and a teacher-controlled assignment builder. Google engineers collaborated with Khan Academy for six months through a Google.org fellowship to integrate these features. Educators can access the tools now to enhance classroom instruction and student engagement.

Khanmigo’s updated features use Gemini’s reasoning capabilities to generate interactive diagrams for math and science, such as charts and geometric shapes. The system adjusts lessons dynamically when students manipulate elements like vertices or line segments. Google engineers and Khan Academy refined diagram quality, relevance, and clarity, while adding a feedback widget to improve user experience. Early feedback suggests increased student engagement and improved question responses when diagrams are used.

The reimagined Practice My Knowledge tool allows teachers to collaborate with Gemini in creating, editing, and validating practice questions before assigning them to students. Educators can upload their own materials for reference and review all generated questions. Teachers receive detailed performance reports to assess student progress. The tool prioritizes teacher control, ensuring assignments align with classroom needs and difficulty levels.

The partnership between Google and Khan Academy reflects a broader effort to develop responsible AI tools for education. Districts using Khanmigo can access the new features immediately.
