A Layered Approach to Drone-Threat Protection
L3Harris outlines a layered strategy to counter evolving drone threats, combining kinetic, electronic warfare, and software solutions for military and civilian protection.
L3Harris Technologies emphasizes a layered approach to counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) threats, citing the rapid evolution of drone tactics and the inadequacy of single-solution defenses. The company states that no single system can cost-effectively address all drone threats across modern battlefields, necessitating interoperable, multi-layered protection. L3Harris highlights its expanding portfolio of kinetic and electronic warfare technologies designed to detect, identify, track, and defeat drones at tactical, fixed-site, and deployed-base levels.
The VAMPIRE® C-UAS system, a low-cost, portable solution, uses laser-guided munitions to neutralize drone threats, with L3Harris noting its precision, reliability, and cost-effectiveness compared to multi-million-dollar missiles. The system has logged over 350,000 operational hours since 2023 in European combat operations, addressing the need for affordable drone engagement amid persistent threats. L3Harris initiated high-volume production of VAMPIRE systems in response to allied requirements, integrating sensor and software solutions onto tactical and non-tactical platforms.
Electronic warfare solutions like Nimble Finch™ and Nimble Finch Pro™ provide purpose-built jamming platforms to defeat medium-size and stand-off range drones, combining high power and efficiency in compact form factors. These technologies are part of L3Harris’ Nimble family of electronic countermeasure systems, designed for mission security and expandable to address emerging threats. The solutions support layered response options for both fixed and temporary installations, including protection of critical infrastructure and high-value assets.
L3Harris introduces Wraith Shield™, a software-only upgrade leveraging radio-as-a-sensor capability to defend against small commercial drone swarms by disrupting their network connections. The system, developed in partnership with DataShapes AI, enables front-line operators to identify and target drone links via a body-worn device, eliminating the need for kinetic engagement. CORVUS-RAVEN, another key capability, provides passive detection and rapid indication of drone activity, supporting integrated air and missile defense challenges on the battlefield.
