Berkeley Lab’s Kristin Persson Elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Kristin Persson, a professor at UC Berkeley and faculty scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a prestigious organization founded in 1781. The Academy recognizes outstanding achievements across science, humanities, arts, policy, and communication. Persson’s election reflects her contributions to materials science and computational research, particularly in high-performance computing applications.

Persson is the founder and director of the Materials Project, an open-access database providing properties for hundreds of thousands of crystalline structures and molecules. The platform is widely used by researchers developing new materials for batteries, fuel cells, and data storage. Its curated datasets support AI-driven materials design, accelerating scientific discovery and innovation in energy technologies.

She previously served as director of the Molecular Foundry, a nanoscience user facility at Berkeley Lab, from 2020 to 2024. Persson holds additional honors, including membership in the National Academy of Engineering and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, as well as fellowships from multiple scientific societies.

Berkeley Lab, managed by the University of California for the U.S. Department of Energy, conducts research in materials, chemistry, physics, and related fields. The lab operates world-class scientific facilities and has been home to 17 Nobel Prize-winning discoveries since its founding in 1931.
