Reiner Kruecken, an internationally recognized nuclear physicist, has been named Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for Berkeley Lab’s Physical Sciences Area, effective July 1. The appointment, approved by the University of California, follows his tenure as Division Director of the Nuclear Science Division since joining the lab in 2022. Kruecken succeeds Natalie Roe, who held the role since 2020.

The Physical Sciences Area oversees four divisions focused on fundamental physics research, from subatomic particles to cosmic structures. It also develops advanced detectors and magnets for major experimental facilities worldwide. Berkeley Lab Director Mike Witherell highlighted Kruecken’s research background and leadership in sustaining the area’s scientific legacy.

Before Berkeley Lab, Kruecken served as Deputy Director and Chief Research Officer at TRIUMF, Canada’s particle accelerator center, where he co-led the ARIEL project. His research spans nuclear structure, astrophysics, and applied science, with leadership roles in international collaborations and advisory bodies across multiple continents.

Kruecken holds a doctorate in nuclear physics from the University of Cologne and is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Physical Society. Berkeley Lab, managed by the University of California for the U.S. Department of Energy, conducts discovery science with 17 Nobel Prizes to its credit.
