NASA, the U.S. Geological Survey, the Office of Naval Research, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture advocated for new instruments to capture detailed images of the planet’s surface. These efforts culminated in the launch of Landsat 1 in 1972, which provided data for monitoring crops, geological features, and natural disasters.

The Gemini experiments laid the groundwork for decades of Earth observation from space, evolving into programs like Landsat and modern satellite missions. While later research identified Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome affecting many astronauts on longer missions, early visual acuity tests helped establish the practical utility of orbital imaging for scientific and societal applications.
