Helping teens learn, plan, and shape the future of AI
OpenAI expands ChatGPT for Teens with College Planner, study tools, and a teen advisory council to support learning, college prep, and digital wellness while gathering direct teen feedback.
OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT for Teens with new tools, including College Planner, which helps students manage college applications, track deadlines, and organize financial aid steps in one place. The feature is designed to assist with practical tasks while leaving personal decisions to students, their families, and counselors. It will initially launch for US high school students in grades 10–12 planning to attend four-year colleges, with plans to expand to other countries and institutions over time.
Teens are already using ChatGPT for learning, with nearly 1.2 million using Learning Visualizations in one week to better understand math and science concepts. Study Mode provided step-by-step learning support to over 180,000 teens in the same period. The platform includes built-in reminders to encourage breaks, with teens averaging under 15 minutes of daily use and most sessions remaining well below three consecutive hours.
To support college access, OpenAI is partnering with College Advising Corps, a nonprofit placing advisers in under-resourced high schools. OpenAI’s contribution will expand the organization’s reach into new states and fund an AI fellowship program where advisers test practical AI applications to help students navigate higher education pathways.
OpenAI is also launching a Teen AI Council in collaboration with Boston Children’s Hospital’s Digital Wellness Lab. The council will include around 22 students aged 14–20 working on digital wellness and AI projects, providing direct feedback to shape future tools. Additionally, new study features like flashcards and quizzes, created from uploaded notes, aim to streamline learning and test preparation for teens.
