Embracing Digital Transformation in Africa: Planet and the Government of Rwanda Launch National Satellite Data Program
Planet Labs and Rwanda’s government launched a national satellite data program to support agriculture, urban planning, disaster response, and education using daily imagery feeds.
In June, Planet Labs and Rwanda’s government, through the Rwanda Space Agency, announced a program providing Planet’s satellite imagery and daily feeds to government agencies, universities, startups, and development partners. The initiative aims to enhance decision-making in agriculture, forest health monitoring, urban planning, and disaster management. By integrating high-resolution data, Rwanda seeks to strengthen national resilience and policy development across key sectors.
Public universities in Rwanda will receive access to Planet’s imagery to train students and develop new courses, building local expertise in satellite data analysis. The program also targets startups to foster innovation and economic growth, aligning with Rwanda’s goal of becoming a regional innovation hub. This marks Planet’s first national-scale program in Africa, following a pilot in Zanzibar.
The Rwanda Space Agency will oversee the program, integrating satellite data into government operations for agriculture, spatial planning, urban management, and disaster response. The initiative builds on Rwanda’s existing commitments to technological advancement and sustainable development. Officials highlight the program’s role in supporting science-based policy and long-term capacity building.
Planet Labs’ Chief Impact Officer Andrew Zolli emphasized the company’s support for African innovation, noting Rwanda’s leadership in adopting advanced technologies. The program reflects a broader trend of using space-based data to address societal challenges, with Rwanda positioning itself as a model for other nations in the region.
