Housemarque and Nixxes collaborated closely to design Saros: Zenith’s boss encounters, with Housemarque shaping the creative vision, world, and combat language while Nixxes handled encounter design, animation, environments, and technical implementation. The bosses were crafted as fully staged experiences rather than simple scaled-up enemies, requiring joint effort from the outset to ensure spectacle and challenge aligned with Housemarque’s action style. Development began with a brief outlining the boss’s vision, gameplay goals, and visual direction, followed by iterative prototyping, playtesting, and refinement until the final encounters were ready for release.

Each boss encounter in Saros: Zenith follows three distinct phases, each altering the arena’s appearance, mechanics, and player challenges, with battles lasting between three and eight minutes. Bosses test players through environmental hazards, bullet patterns, beams, and physical attacks, encouraging deliberate use of shield, jumping, parrying, and dashing abilities. The design prioritizes fairness, ensuring players understand their mistakes and feel motivated to improve rather than encountering unfair obstacles.

The Prophet serves as the introductory boss, designed to introduce players to Saros’s boss structure without becoming a major progression barrier, balancing drama with approachability. The Architect features a collapsing arena atop a tower, forcing players to grapple and survive the environment alongside the boss, while the Shepherd is a large-scale battle on a ship with tentacles that shrink the arena and spawn unpredictable attacks.

The Priestess employs illusion and transformation, evolving from clone-based combat to a floating arena that combines combat, puzzle-solving, and platforming, while the King, as the final boss, escalates in intensity and unpredictability without relying on gimmicks, testing the player’s mastery of all learned skills. Overlord Rush mode allows players to revisit these encounters in a faster, more replayable format, with the developers aiming to create memorable, fair, and thrilling battles.
