Battlefield 6 Is Free on Steam, but Not for Long
EA’s Battlefield 6 is available as a free Steam trial until Oct. 20, coinciding with Season 5’s launch featuring new maps, weapons, and a battle royale mode.
EA’s Battlefield 6 is currently free to play on Steam, giving players a limited-time opportunity to experience the game without an upfront purchase. The trial runs through Oct. 20, aligning with the launch of Season 5, which introduces new maps, six weapons, two vehicles, and Rapid Royale, a faster-paced battle royale mode. Players can also access a limited-time Halloween event inspired by EA’s Dead Space franchise, featuring themed cosmetics and references to the alien Markers. The trial period provides a chance to evaluate the game before committing to a purchase.
Season 5’s update includes a discounted Standard Edition priced at $27.99 on Steam, reduced from $69.99, available through Oct. 20. The update also introduces Rapid Royale, a new free-to-play battle royale mode designed for quicker matches. Additionally, a Halloween event themed around Dead Space offers crossover content, though details remain sparse. Players can explore these features during the free trial before deciding whether to buy.
Criticism has emerged over Season 5’s battle pass cosmetics, with players questioning whether some designs were generated using AI. Examples include a soldier carrying identical pistols and a character with a misspelled arm patch. Concerns have also been raised about the design of ammunition magazines in the paid battle pass. These issues follow earlier complaints about suspected AI-generated artwork in the game, adding to the mixed reception of Season 5.
Beyond games, the Battlefield franchise is expanding into film, with Sony Pictures reportedly securing rights to a movie adaptation. Christopher McQuarrie, known for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, is attached to direct, while Michael B. Jordan is set to star. Plot details and a release date for the film have not yet been announced, leaving the focus on the current Steam trial for now.
