Listen to a Wild, 2-Hour UFO 50 Mashup Album by Trombone Champ’s Co-Creator
A two-hour album remixes hip-hop tracks with music from every game in the UFO 50 collection, created by Dan Vecchitto as a passion project.
Video game music mashups from the late 2000s have returned with UFO 50,000, a two-hour mixtape blending hip-hop vocals with soundtracks from all 50 games in UFO 50. The project was sparked by Vecchitto’s participation in a podcast episode about each game in developer Mossmouth’s collection. He began with a single remix and expanded the project over two years, ultimately completing 50 tracks despite initial hesitation about difficult mixes.
Vecchitto’s creative process involved pairing game themes with hip-hop lyrics to create thematic mashups, such as Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” reworked to match the western RPG Grimstone. Other standout tracks include “Still Mortol,” which overlays Geto Boys’ “Still” onto a game about sacrificing lives, and “Can I Kick It Club?” combining a soccer game theme with A Tribe Called Quest’s song.
The album’s most technically challenging remix, “Waldorf Around,” reimagines House of Pain’s “Jump Around” to fit the walrus platformer Waldorf’s Journey’s irregular time signature. Vecchitto described the result as dreamy and ethereal, highlighting how mashups can transform songs into something new. The project underscores the versatility of UFO 50’s soundtrack, curated by Eirik Suhrke.
UFO 50,000 is available to stream on YouTube and offers a cohesive, unpredictable listening experience. Even brief sampling of tracks reveals the album’s playful and inventive approach, mirroring the exploratory nature of playing UFO 50 itself.
