Ubisoft Shuts Down Beloved 26-Year-Old Studio, Cuts 'Black Flag' Remake Devs
Ubisoft will close its 26-year-old Finnish studio RedLynx and lay off 70 staff at Ubisoft Singapore, impacting ongoing projects and recent releases.
Ubisoft announced the closure of RedLynx, the Finnish studio behind the Trials series, subject to local negotiations affecting up to 52 positions. The studio, founded in 2000, had released over 30 titles, including Trials HD for Xbox 360, which sold over 2 million copies. RedLynx’s last major release was Trials Rising in 2019, and it later supported projects like Star Wars: Outlaws. Ubisoft described the decision as part of a broader restructuring effort.
Ubisoft Singapore, which developed Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced, is cutting 70 positions to align with production needs. The studio remains part of Ubisoft’s global production network despite the layoffs. Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced sold over 3 million copies in its first week and peaked at 99,000 concurrent players on Steam. Ubisoft emphasized its commitment to supporting affected teams during the process.
RedLynx’s closure follows Ubisoft’s October 2025 announcement of up to 60 layoffs and a shift toward mobile game development. The studio had previously worked on a Stadia port of The Division 2 and mobile titles like Gwen’s Getaway. Trials, the studio’s signature series, is a motorcycle racing game known for its challenging physics-based gameplay. Ubisoft acquired RedLynx in 2011 and released several sequels under its banner.
Ubisoft’s latest restructuring comes amid broader financial challenges, including the March 2025 spin-off of major franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Rainbow Six into a Tencent-backed entity. Last week, Ubisoft also announced the shutdown of its Rainbow Six mobile game. The company has not provided further details on the financial impact of these closures and layoffs.
