Cancelled MMO spin-off Borderlands Online is playable once again, and the team behind the unofficial project thankfully didn't use any genAI to get it running
A cancelled free-to-play Borderlands MMO spin-off, Borderlands Online, has been revived by modders and is now playable in English.
A previously cancelled free-to-play MMO spin-off titled Borderlands Online has been revived by dedicated modders and is now playable. The project, initially planned for release exclusively in China, was discovered as a build a year ago and has since undergone extensive restoration. Modder EpicNNG described the workload as unprecedented, requiring overcoming login barriers and translating the game into English while adapting UI elements for character format differences.
The translation process involved customizing user interface and heads-up display components to accommodate linguistic and formatting variations. EpicNNG emphasized the urgency of the project, noting that the rise of AI tools made it necessary to act quickly to prevent the work from becoming obsolete. The team prioritized avoiding generative AI in their efforts, contrasting with many unofficial projects that rely on such technology.
EpicNNG acknowledged receiving informal tips suggesting publisher Take-Two is aware of the project, though no official communication has been received. The modder stated they would comply with any formal request to halt the project, underscoring the voluntary and unpaid nature of the work. Despite the lack of commercial intent, the revival is unlikely to lead to a full revival of the original game due to its age.
The team anticipates the project may eventually be taken down, advising interested players to experience it promptly. The playable version offers an opportunity to explore a previously unreleased title, reflecting the dedication of modding communities to preserve and restore abandoned projects.
