Factorio's final major update has rolled off the assembly line, adding "the things we wanted to do for 2.0 but didn't have time for"
Factorio’s final major update, version 2.1, introduces over 30 quality-of-life improvements and minor features without expanding the core game or expansion.
Factorio’s developer Wube Software has released version 2.1, marking the game’s last major update on its stable branch. The update focuses on over 30 quality-of-life improvements and minor features rather than introducing new content, fulfilling planned additions deferred from version 2.0. The changes aim to refine existing mechanics and address long-standing player requests.
Among the new features are mixed rocket payloads, allowing players to send multiple item types in a single launch, and land mines repurposed as tripwires or enemy detectors. Asteroid damage now scales with remaining health instead of speed, making impacts more predictable. These adjustments address practical gameplay frustrations while maintaining the game’s core design philosophy.
Players can now disable the controversial Quality mechanic when playing the Space Age expansion, and pumpjacks and burner miners can be flipped rather than only rotated. Graphical improvements include new models and a pump rendering system that connects fluid wagons regardless of station layout complexity. These updates enhance visual clarity and reduce frustration in complex builds.
While version 2.1 is the final major update, Wube Software will continue providing bug fixes and support-level updates. The studio has indicated a shift toward other prototypes and experiments, though Factorio’s legacy as a foundational automation sim remains intact after eight years of development and early access.
