Marathon's next major update runs a few months further away, permanent PvE in hand, as Bungie ditch their "strict seasonal schedule"

Bungie has postponed the Marathon update from September 22 to December 8 as part of the Symbiosis update, which will include a new permanent PvE mode. The studio cited the need for more development time to address player feedback about depth, variety, and progression. The delay marks a shift away from the studio’s established seasonal update cadence, allowing for more flexible planning and testing of major features.

The Symbiosis update will feature a refreshed Perimeter zone, a social space/firing range, an experimental team deathmatch mode, and improvements to new player onboarding. A smaller update on October 6 will reset progression and the in-game economy, preparing the groundwork for the December release. Bungie emphasized that these changes aim to provide stronger long-term engagement for players.

Bungie explained that the decision to move away from fixed seasonal deadlines stems from player feedback requesting more substantial content and better progression systems. The studio acknowledged that addressing these concerns requires both new features and a revised delivery approach. The October update will serve as a transitional reset before the larger December release.

The upcoming PvE mode in Symbiosis appears inspired by *Helldivers 2*, featuring space bug-stomping gameplay based on promotional imagery. Bungie described this update as the first major step in Marathon’s next chapter, signaling a broader shift in how the game will evolve. The studio remains committed to Marathon despite the absence of other major releases since June.
