Derek Wilson reappointed as Chair of the Sports Grounds Safety Authority Board
Derek Wilson has been reappointed as Chair of the Sports Grounds Safety Authority Board for a third term, overseeing stadium safety and accessibility standards.
The Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport announced Derek Wilson’s reappointment as Chair of the Sports Grounds Safety Authority Board, effective from 1 April 2027 to 31 March 2030. This follows his prior two terms, during which he contributed to safety and accessibility policies for sports venues. The role involves leading the authority responsible for regulating safety at sports grounds across the UK. Wilson’s appointment aligns with the Governance Code on Public Appointments, ensuring compliance with public sector standards.
Derek Wilson brings over 30 years of experience as a specialist sports architect, with a focus on stadium design and safety. His career includes leadership roles in major events such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games, where he served as Head of Design and Overlay for London 2012. Wilson has worked on high-profile projects for clubs including Arsenal FC, Everton FC, and Optus Stadium in Perth, as well as advising the Premier League on accessibility since 2014.
In his previous tenure on the SGSA Board, Wilson played a key role in shaping safety and accessibility standards for sports venues. He currently chairs the Premier League Stadium Improvement Panel, further influencing policies to enhance spectator experiences. His expertise spans both private and public sectors, including service on the Football Licensing Authority and the SGSA Board.
The appointment is remunerated at £36,260 per annum and has been made in accordance with the Governance Code on Public Appointments. The process is regulated by the Commissioner for Public Appointments, with no significant political activity declared by Wilson in the last five years. DCMS oversees around 400 public appointment roles across 44 bodies, encouraging applications from diverse backgrounds.
