Two new non-executive board members join DfT's board

The Department for Transport (DfT) has appointed Sir Charles Randell CBE as Lead Non-Executive Board Member and Harjit Sandhu as Non-Executive Board Member and Chair of the Group Audit, Risk and Assurance Committee (ARAC). Both roles involve providing independent advice, support, and constructive challenge to ministers and senior officials. Their appointments aim to enhance the department’s governance and performance through external expertise.

Sir Charles Randell CBE will serve a three-year term starting in October 2026, following a fair and open competition conducted under the Cabinet Office’s public appointments governance code. The process ensured transparency and adherence to merit-based selection criteria, with no political influence in the decision. His role as Lead Non-Executive Board Member will involve leading the board’s independent oversight function.

Harjit Sandhu’s appointment as Non-Executive Board Member and ARAC Chair began on 1 September 2026, with a three-year term. His selection was made under section 7.10 of the governance code, which permits ministers to appoint candidates previously deemed appointable in other competitions. This provision allows for efficient use of pre-assessed talent while maintaining high standards of governance.

All public appointments are made on merit through fair and open processes, unless exceptions permitted by the governance code apply. Both appointees have declared no political activity, in line with transparency requirements. The DfT’s board will now benefit from their independent perspectives to strengthen decision-making and accountability within the department.
