Volkswagen will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its GTI models at the 24h Nürburgring from May 14 to 17, 2026, with a series of events centered on the iconic badge. The highlight will be the world premiere of the all-electric ID. Polo GTI, marking the first time an electric model carries the GTI designation. The event will take place on the Ring-Boulevard, offering fans a first look at the new vehicle in a motorsport setting. Volkswagen has chosen the Nürburgring, Germany’s largest motorsport event with an estimated 280,000 spectators, to host the anniversary celebrations.

Three Golf GTI Clubsport 24h race cars will compete in the endurance event, with two entering the SP4T class and one in SP3T. The SP4T class cars, numbered 50 and 76, will be driven by teams including Johan Kristoffersson, Fabian Vettel, and Benjamin Leuchter, aiming for a third consecutive class victory. The SP3T class car, numbered 10, will feature former soccer player Max Kruse among its drivers. All three cars are prepared by Max Kruse Racing and powered by E20 fuel, which contains 60% renewable materials to reduce CO₂ emissions.

The Golf GTI Clubsport 24h has been further developed for the 2026 race, with enhancements including active gearbox cooling and fine-tuned engine calibration to improve reliability. The vehicle weighs just 1,200 kg, thanks to lightweight construction such as carbon fiber doors and boot lid, while its race chassis has been adapted to handle the Nordschleife’s demanding conditions. The car produces 397 PS (291 kW) and is designed for both agility and endurance in the 24-hour marathon.

In addition to the race cars, Volkswagen will showcase a range of high-performance models at the Ring-Boulevard, including the Golf R 24H show car, previewing the brand’s 2027 Nürburgring race car. A parade of around 40 GTI models from all eight generations will also take place before the endurance race, with the new ID. Polo GTI joining the lineup. The event will provide fans with a comprehensive display of Volkswagen’s GTI heritage and future direction.
