Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced the general availability of Amazon EC2 Storage Optimized I8g instances in the AWS Europe (Paris) and Asia Pacific (Jakarta) regions. These instances are designed for storage-intensive workloads and are powered by AWS Graviton4 processors, which AWS states offer the best compute performance in Amazon EC2 for such tasks. The instances leverage third-generation AWS Nitro SSDs, providing up to 65% better real-time storage performance per TB compared to I4g instances, alongside reductions in storage I/O latency and variability.

AWS describes I8g instances as suitable for I/O-intensive workloads requiring rapid data access and low latency, including transactional and real-time distributed databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, HBase, and NoSQL solutions like Aerospike, MongoDB, ClickHouse, and Apache Druid. The instances are also optimized for real-time analytics platforms, data lakehouses, and AI large language model preprocessing for training. They are available in eleven sizes, including two bare metal options, offering up to 1.5 TiB of memory and 45 TB of local instance storage.

The new instances deliver up to 100 Gbps of network performance bandwidth and 60 Gbps of dedicated bandwidth for Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS). AWS emphasizes that I8g instances are built on the AWS Nitro System, which offloads CPU virtualization, storage, and networking functions to dedicated hardware and software to enhance performance and security for workloads. The instances are positioned to improve efficiency for applications demanding high-speed storage access and low latency.

To use I8g instances, customers can access them through the AWS Management Console, AWS Command Line Interface (AWS CLI), and AWS SDKs.
