Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio brings richer Git version control to all project tools
AWS announced Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio now offers Git version control across Query Editor, Visual ETL, Workflows, and Notebooks, replacing prior automatic sync with file-level control.
The useful question is what changes for users, developers or buyers, and whether the announcement stays industry context or becomes something people can actually use.
Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio now integrates Git version control directly into Query Editor, Visual ETL, Workflows, and Notebooks, replacing the previous automatic sync approach with granular, file-level tracking. Users can select specific files to version by adding them to repositories on GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket, with no forced project-level enforcement. Changes can be committed and pushed in a single action, and repositories can be added to existing projects at any time, decoupling version control from project creation. Projects support connections to multiple repositories and branches simultaneously, enabling branch creation, updates, and conflict resolution without leaving the project environment.
For users of JupyterLab or Code Editor, full Git CLI access remains available through the built-in terminal, maintaining compatibility with existing workflows. The feature is available across all AWS Regions where Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio is supported, including both IAM and IAM Identity Center domains. Existing projects using the prior Git experience can opt in to the enhanced model by updating their project settings.
Administrators can configure Git connections through the Admin Guide, while users can begin working with repositories by following the User Guide instructions. This update standardizes source control across SageMaker tools, addressing prior limitations in Notebooks and improving flexibility for project teams. The change does not impose mandatory versioning at the project level, allowing teams to adopt Git workflows incrementally.
To transition from the previous Git experience, users must update their project settings to enable the new model. The updated version control system is designed to integrate seamlessly with existing SageMaker tools while providing more control over file tracking and collaboration workflows.
