Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced the general availability of a new AWS Local Zone in Las Vegas, Nevada, expanding its infrastructure to support compute, storage, and networking services closer to end users. The Local Zone enables deployment of Amazon EC2 instances (C7i, M7i, R7i, and C8gn), Amazon EBS volumes (gp3, gp2, io1, sc1, and st1), and container services like Amazon ECS and Amazon EKS. This deployment supports workloads requiring single-digit millisecond latency, such as AI/ML inference and legacy application modernization. The Las Vegas Local Zone is identified as us-west-2-las-2a and can be enabled via the AWS Global View or ModifyAvailabilityZoneGroup API.
AWS Local Zones are designed to extend core AWS services to metropolitan areas beyond traditional regions, helping organizations meet data residency requirements while maintaining consistent APIs and tools. The Las Vegas deployment joins over 30 other Local Zones worldwide, providing organizations with additional options for deploying latency-sensitive applications.
