AWS Systems Manager Parameter Store now allows organization and validation with built-in data types
AWS Systems Manager Parameter Store introduces 13 new parameter data types with built-in validation to prevent malformed configuration values across workloads.
AWS Systems Manager Parameter Store now supports 13 new parameter data types—including aws:region, aws:account:id, boolean, integer, float, binary, hostname, email, ipv4-address, ipv6-address, url, json, and jsonc—that automatically validate parameter values during creation or updates. These types help prevent issues like invalid IP addresses or AWS account IDs from being stored, eliminating the need for custom validation logic. The new data types are available for both standard and advanced parameters, with url, json, and jsonc restricted to advanced parameters. Parameters using url, json, or jsonc are charged at existing advanced parameter pricing.
The validation occurs when calling PutParameter, rejecting any value that does not match the specified data type. This ensures only correctly formatted values are stored, reducing runtime errors in applications. Standard and advanced parameters can use the new types, and several also support StringList parameters, where each item in the list is individually validated.
Users can filter parameters by type when calling the DescribeParameters API or browsing the Parameter Store console, improving organization and searchability. The new data types work with both String and SecureString parameters, and existing text parameters can have their data type changed. Additional constraints can be applied using AllowedPattern alongside the new data types.
The new data types are available in all regions where AWS Systems Manager is available. For more details, AWS directs users to the Parameter data types section in the AWS Systems Manager User Guide. The changes aim to streamline parameter management and reduce configuration errors across workloads.
