Inside the Gemmaverse: Celebrating one billion Gemma downloads
Google’s Gemma open AI models have reached one billion downloads, with developers deploying them in space, healthcare, and marine research, and launching a new GitHub repository to showcase projects.

Google announced that its Gemma family of open AI models has surpassed one billion downloads since its introduction two years ago. The milestone reflects the rapid adoption of Gemma across diverse environments, from local devices to space-based systems, where developers have published over 100,000 model variants. The company emphasized that the downloads are less significant than the practical applications being developed by the community, which it collectively refers to as the Gemmaverse. This ecosystem spans industries and disciplines, demonstrating the model’s versatility in real-world scenarios.
Teams from NASA, Satlyt, and Starcloud are deploying Gemma in orbit to perform tasks such as onboard image analysis and optimizing communication bandwidth between satellites. On Earth, India’s National Health Authority integrated Gemma 4 and the Google open-source Medical Data Toolkit into Aarogya Setu 2.0, an app with over 100 million Android downloads. The integration enables the processing of complex medical reports into standardized digital formats, allowing users to manage and share health data securely across providers.
Researchers from Yale and Google developed C2S-Scale, an AI model built on Gemma that interprets cellular data and identified a novel cancer therapy pathway verified in living cells. This marks the first instance of an AI system generating a verified mechanistic therapeutic pathway. MedGemma, a domain-specific medical model, is being used globally to support clinical applications, including outpatient triage at AIIMS and systems for frontline health workers in rural Uganda. These projects highlight the model’s role in accelerating healthcare innovation and accessibility.
In collaboration with Georgia Tech and the Wild Dolphin Project, researchers created DolphinGemma to analyze dolphin vocalizations and predict sound sequences, addressing a longstanding challenge in marine biology. To foster further collaboration, Google is launching the Awesome Gemma repository on GitHub, a curated directory featuring community projects, fine-tunes, tutorials, and tools. The repository aims to help developers share, discover, and build upon existing work, supporting innovation across sectors from spaceflight to healthcare.
