NASA’s upcoming Gateways to Blue Skies competition challenges collegiate teams to develop aircraft capable of inspecting critical land-based infrastructure such as bridges and tunnels by 2035 or earlier. The goal is to improve safety, reliability, and cost-effectiveness while addressing the limitations of traditional inspection methods. Infrastructure inspections are vital but often hindered by structural size, accessibility issues, and hazardous conditions, which can disrupt operations and pose risks to workers.

The competition, led by NASA’s Langley Research Center, emphasizes the growing need for creative airborne solutions to support infrastructure maintenance. Steven Holz, the competition lead, highlighted the urgency of innovative approaches to meet rising demands. Open to multidisciplinary teams of two to six students, the competition is divided into two phases, with Phase 1 requiring a proposal and a two-minute video submission judged by NASA and industry experts.

Up to eight finalist teams will each receive a $9,000 prize and advance to Phase 2, where they will present their updated work at a forum in May 2027. Winners may earn internship opportunities with NASA Aeronautics in the following academic year. The competition is sponsored by NASA’s University Innovation Project and focuses on engaging students from diverse backgrounds and academic levels.

Teams interested in participating must review guidelines and eligibility requirements on the competition website. A non-binding Notice of Intent is due by October 12, with proposal and video submissions due February 22, 2027. The competition is managed by NASA’s Aeronautics Division and the Center of Excellence for Collaborative Innovation, with the National Institute of Aerospace administering the challenge on behalf of NASA.
