GitHub Copilot’s use shows the model works at scale, opening a code channel in 30% of its agent sessions for substantial collaborative tasks.

Slack Code initially launched in August to move agentic development from isolated tabs into shared Slack channels, where teams could observe and contribute to agent tasks. Launch partners including Anthropic, Cognition, GitHub, and Vercel tested this concept using dedicated code channels that centralize context, participants, and plans. GitHub Copilot’s use shows the model works at scale, opening a code channel in 30% of its agent sessions for substantial collaborative tasks.

Developers requested broader access to build similar experiences for their own agents, prompting Salesforce to open the Slack Code API generally. The API lets any developer configure an agent to initiate code channels, add relevant people and files, post updates, and archive channels upon completion. It provides primitives used by launch partners, removing prior barriers like managing API calls or cramped standard threads for large artifacts.

The API simplifies multiplayer agent experiences by handling interface elements such as code diffs, HTML previews, and execution steps, allowing developers to focus on agent logic rather than UI. It supports enterprise security needs by inheriting channel permissions and governance, eliminating separate access models. Teams can deploy agents and models interchangeably while maintaining a consistent workspace.

Enhanced Pull Request features in Slack Code extend collaboration to deployment, enabling GitHub users to request reviews, sync comments bidirectionally, and merge directly from code channels. Agents can also create channels from mentions, add artifacts, and post status updates, with all work remaining searchable and governed by existing Slack controls.
