Electric future, established name: The new ID. Tiguan premieres in October
Volkswagen will launch the all-electric ID. Tiguan in early 2027, succeeding the ID.4 and ID.5 while sharing the Tiguan name with combustion and hybrid models.
Volkswagen announced the ID. Tiguan, an all-electric SUV set to premiere in early October, marking the next step in its ID. series. The new model will replace the ID.4 and ID.5, expanding Volkswagen’s electric lineup while maintaining the Tiguan brand name. The ID. Tiguan will be positioned alongside existing Tiguan variants with internal combustion and hybrid powertrains, offering customers a broader choice of propulsion systems. The vehicle will undergo final testing under camouflage wraps ahead of its global unveiling.
The Tiguan name carries significant brand equity, with over 8.3 million units produced, reflecting its status as a versatile and premium model. Volkswagen’s CEO Thomas Schäfer emphasized the Tiguan’s reputation for quality and adaptability, stating the ID. Tiguan will carry this legacy into the electric era. The new model is designed to combine the Tiguan’s strengths with modern electric vehicle features, including premium design and advanced technologies. Both the ID. Tiguan and the combustion Tiguan will serve different customer preferences within the same product line.
Volkswagen highlighted the Tiguan’s dominance in the SUV segment, where it ranks as the brand’s best-selling model globally. In 2021 alone, deliveries of the Tiguan and its sister model, the Tayron, exceeded one million units across petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid variants. This success underscores the Tiguan’s role as a cornerstone of Volkswagen’s product strategy. The ID.4 and ID.5, Volkswagen’s top-selling battery-electric models, have also achieved strong sales, with over 950,000 units delivered since 2021.
The ID. Tiguan’s launch reflects Volkswagen’s strategy to leverage established model names for its electric vehicles, providing customers with familiar yet forward-looking options. The company aims to bridge the gap between traditional and electric mobility by offering the Tiguan name across multiple powertrain types. The ID. Tiguan will compete in a segment where SUVs are increasingly popular, reinforcing Volkswagen’s position in the electric vehicle market. The model’s premiere in October will mark a key milestone in the brand’s transition toward electrification.
