Superbubble in the Large Magellanic Cloud
NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope reveals a striking nebula, N44, in the Large Magellanic Cloud, featuring a massive superbubble carved by stellar winds and supernovae.
NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has captured a detailed image of nebula N44, located in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The photograph highlights two prominent features: a large central void and a surrounding shell of dense, dusty gas. The central void, known as a superbubble, spans approximately 210 by 140 light-years, making it a prominent structure within the nebula.
The superbubble’s formation is attributed to the intense activity of stars at its center. These stars, through their powerful stellar winds and explosive supernovae, expelled much of the gas from which they originally formed. This process created the vast empty space observed in the nebula.
N44 is situated in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way. Its proximity to Earth provides astronomers with a valuable opportunity to study the dynamics of nebulae and the lifecycle of massive stars in greater detail.
The image, taken on Sept. 3, 2026, offers scientists new insights into the processes shaping nebulae and the role of stellar winds and supernovae in sculpting these cosmic structures.
